'08 Atoms Finish Third at "The Cup" Tournament in Buffalo--Perfect in Pool Play
The Barrie Jr. Colts '08 AAA Atom team traveled to Buffalo, NY, over the past weekend and competed in "The Cup" tournament. With 39 teams in the draw, it is one of the largest tournaments in North America (and with multiple age groups). The team had an excellent showing, finishing third with a 5-1 record, eventually falling to the number one ranked team in the USA, Mid Fairfield Jr. Rangers, 2-3 in the semi-finals.

The team played perfect hockey through pool play, recording four consecutive shutouts and outscoring their opponents 28-0. Round robin play was highlighted by a convincing 5-0 win over a top American team, Top Gun, in one of the fastest skating games of the tournament.

With only eight teams making the quarter-finals, Barrie faced Huron Perth early Sunday morning. Travelling through treacherous conditions (8+ inches of blowing snow overnight and many cars needing to be dug/pushed out), the team came to the rink ready to play. The team finished the game with 5-1 win, moving them on to the semi-finals later Sunday morning versus Mid Fairfield Jr. Rangers, the number one ranked team in the US.

The semis proved to be a hard fought game. Both teams played well and both left it all on the ice. The Jr. Colts eventually fell to the Jr. Rangers 2-3. This game proved to be one of the best of the tournament between two strong teams (the finals was won by the Jr. Rangers 8-1).

The coaches and players are to be congratulated for their hard work and strong result. All members contributed to the team's play. It is a testament to their effort and dedication towards the game and their team. The team would like to thank all of the parents for making this weekend happen and for the generous support of all of the sponsors. None of this would be possible without you.

The '08 Atom AAA Jr. Colts return to practice this week hungrier than ever. They look to finish off their regular season (where they are ranked first in the West) and begin playoffs. The team is looking forward to the opportunity to defend their OMHA title from a year ago.
