Atom Colts Bring Nations Cup Home to Canada
The Northern Comfort Windows and Doors Atom AAA Colts travelled to Lansing, Michigan to play in the Nations Cup Dec 11 – 13.  This unique event features 6 Canadian playing against 6 American teams,  both wearing Team Canada and Team USA jerseys in a battle for the Nations’ Cup.

Friday brought a busy day with 2 games, a tour of the Michigan State Hockey Facilities and the Michigan State/Wisconsin game Friday night.  The players were up to the task and looked sharp in their Team Canada jerseys as they handled the Cleveland Jr Jacks 12-0 in game one and followed up with an 8-2 win over Fox Motors in game 2.

Day 2 would bring some stiffer competition with Team Illinois in game 1 followed by Compuware in game 2. The players were once again up to the task, handling a scrappy Team Illinois 3-1 Saturday morning.  Compuware proved to be a tough opponent as well with the Colts needing 2 goals in the 3rd period as well as a breakaway save at the buzzer by Aidan Amidovski to preserve the 2-1 win.

The win, combined with the Soo Greyhounds tying their final round robin game, secured the Colts the #1 seed for the Canadian side and had them playing for the Championship on Sunday.  The opponent would once again be Team Illinois.  The teams traded chances in the first with Team Illinois finding the net to take a 1-0 lead after 1.  The Colts controlled the play for most of the 2nd but were unable to find the back of the net.  As the 3rd period began, other teams began filling up the arena dressed in their Team Canada jerseys. They began a Canada chant that our players really fed off.  Liam McKenzie buried a rebound on the PP early in the 3rd to send the crowd into a frenzy, leading to more “CAN-A-DA” chants.  Carson Eagles and Carson Rehkopf quickly added 2 highlight reel goals to give the Colts a 3-1 lead with just under 10 minutes to go.  The Colts would ride strong pressure and steady goaltending from Ashton Shaw to complete the 3-1 victory and secure the Championship.  Canada won the Nations Cup as a whole, winning all 6 playoff games with the Colts securing top seed and Tournament Champion by winning the #1 seed game.  All Canadian teams joined the Colts on the ice for a crazy celebration.  It was a unique event that the kids won’t soon forget.

Great job Colts in bringing home your 2nd tourney championship this season!
